How it's calculated
FV = P × [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
i = annual rate ÷ 12, n = years × 12
Each instalment compounds for the remaining months. Summing all instalments gives the annuity-due formula above. Returns = FV − total invested.
Assumptions
- Instalments are invested at the start of each month.
- Monthly rate is annual rate ÷ 12 (nominal), a common industry convention. Using the effective monthly rate gives a slightly lower value.
- Returns are constant; real markets fluctuate.
How to use this calculator
- Enter monthly investment. Set the amount you plan to invest every month.
- Set expected return. Enter an expected annual return rate.
- Choose duration. Set the number of years you will stay invested.
- Read the projection. See expected value, total invested and returns, or switch to Goal mode to solve for the SIP.
Frequently asked questions
What is a SIP?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) invests a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals, usually monthly. It averages your purchase cost over market ups and downs (rupee-cost averaging) and builds the habit of investing regularly.
How is SIP maturity value calculated?
FV = P × [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i), where P is the monthly instalment, i is the monthly rate (annual rate ÷ 12) and n is the number of months. The (1 + i) factor assumes each instalment is invested at the start of the month.
What return rate should I assume?
Equity mutual funds have historically delivered roughly 10-14% over long periods in India, but returns are not guaranteed and vary widely year to year. Conservative planners use 10-12% for equity and 6-8% for debt. Try several rates to see the range.
Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No. SIPs in market-linked funds can lose value, especially over short periods. This calculator shows a constant-return projection for planning, not a promise.
How much SIP do I need for ₹1 crore?
Turn on Goal mode, enter ₹1,00,00,000 as the target and the calculator solves for the monthly SIP. For example at 12% for 20 years you need roughly ₹10,000 per month.
Should I adjust for inflation?
Yes, for long goals. ₹1 crore in 20 years buys much less than ₹1 crore today. Switch on the inflation toggle to see the value in today's rupees.
Does the result include taxes and expense ratio?
No. Mutual fund returns quoted are usually net of the fund's expense ratio, but capital gains tax on redemption and exit loads are not included here.
