How it's calculated

FV = P × (1 + r)ⁿ
Returns = FV − P

Compound growth means each year's return is earned on the previous year's total, including earlier returns.

Assumptions

  • Constant annual return, compounded yearly.
  • No taxes, exit loads or additional contributions.

Frequently asked questions

How is lumpsum return calculated?

FV = P × (1 + r)ⁿ, where P is the amount invested, r the annual return rate as a decimal and n the number of years. Returns compound annually.

Lumpsum or SIP: which is better?

If you already have the money, lumpsum gives it more time to compound, which wins in rising markets. SIP spreads entry over time and reduces timing risk, and suits regular income. Many investors split a large sum into staggered instalments (STP).

What is the rule of 72?

Divide 72 by the annual return to estimate years to double your money. At 12% it takes about 6 years; at 8%, about 9 years.

How much do I need to invest today for a future goal?

Use Goal mode: enter the target amount and the calculator solves for the lumpsum required, given your return and period.

Is the result post-tax?

No. Capital gains tax depends on the asset (equity, debt, etc.) and holding period and is not deducted here.

Why show inflation-adjusted value?

Prices rise over time, so a future ₹50 lakh buys less than ₹50 lakh today. The inflation toggle discounts the result to today's purchasing power.
