How it's calculated

Cumulative: A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t)
Simple: A = P × (1 + r × t)

Interest is credited every 1/n of a year and added to the principal, so the next period's interest is computed on a larger amount.

Assumptions

  • Rate is constant for the whole tenure.
  • Pre-tax; no TDS or premature-withdrawal penalty.

Frequently asked questions

How is FD maturity amount calculated?

For a cumulative FD: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t), where P is the deposit, r the annual rate, n the compounding periods per year and t the tenure in years. For a simple-interest (payout) FD: A = P + P × r × t.

Which compounding frequency do Indian banks use?

Most banks compound cumulative FDs quarterly. Some small finance banks and NBFCs offer monthly or yearly options. Quarterly is the default here.

What is the difference between cumulative and payout FD?

In a cumulative FD interest is reinvested and paid at maturity, so it compounds. In a payout FD interest is paid out monthly/quarterly/annually, so you get periodic income but no compounding on it. The simple-interest option approximates the total payout.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. Interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS (10%) if interest exceeds the annual threshold (₹50,000, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens, per bank per year from FY 2025-26; verify the current limit). This calculator shows pre-tax figures.

What is effective annual yield?

The true annual return after compounding. A 7% FD compounded quarterly has an effective yield of about 7.19%.

Are bank FDs safe?

Deposits up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank are insured by DICGC. Beyond that, safety depends on the bank's strength.

What if I break my FD early?

Banks usually charge a penalty of about 0.5-1% on the applicable rate and pay interest for the period actually held. Check your bank's terms.
