Disclaimer: The PPF rate is notified by the Government of India every quarter. Verify the current rate and rules on the official India Post / bank portals.
How it's calculated
Balanceᵧ = (Balanceᵧ₋₁ + Deposit) × (1 + r) [deposit by 5 April]
Interest is credited yearly; r = annual rate ÷ 100
Because PPF interest is credited once a year, the yearly compounding formula above matches actual accounts when you deposit before the 5th of April. For monthly deposits we sum monthly interest on the running balance and credit it at year end. Depositing at year end earns no interest for that year's deposit.
Assumptions
- The rate stays constant, though the government revises it quarterly.
- Extension blocks continue at the same rate; they can be with or without contributions.
How to use this calculator
- Set yearly deposit. Enter your annual contribution up to ₹1.5 lakh.
- Check interest rate. Update the current PPF rate if it has changed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the current PPF interest rate?
The PPF rate is set by the Government of India and reviewed every quarter, so it can change. It has been 7.1% for a long stretch recently. The rate here is editable; always check the latest rate on the India Post or your bank's website.
What is the maximum PPF investment?
₹1.5 lakh per financial year across all your PPF accounts (minimum ₹500). Deposits above the limit earn no interest and are not eligible for deduction. The calculator caps contributions at ₹1.5 lakh.
How is PPF interest calculated?
Interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, and credited annually on 31 March. To earn full-year interest, deposit before the 5th of April (or by the 5th of each month if depositing monthly).
Is PPF maturity taxable?
PPF has EEE status: contributions qualify for deduction under Section 80C (old regime), interest is tax-free and the maturity amount is tax-free.
Can I extend a PPF account after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without further contributions. With contributions you must submit Form H within one year of maturity; otherwise it continues without contributions but still earns interest.
Can I withdraw from PPF before 15 years?
Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year (up to 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th preceding year). Loans are available between years 3 and 6. Premature closure is allowed only in limited cases after 5 years.
Is PPF better than FD?
PPF typically offers a higher post-tax return than bank FDs because the interest is tax-free, but money is locked in for 15 years with limited withdrawals.
