How it's calculated
Deposit years = 15. Maturity = 21 years from opening.
Yearly, before 5 April: balance = (balance + deposit) × (1 + rate) for 15 years, then balance × (1 + rate) for 6 more.
Monthly, before the 5th: interest = sum of each month's balance × rate ÷ 12, credited at year end.
Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and compounded once a year. A deposit that is in before 5 April earns a full year. The same money paid monthly earns less. At a constant 8.2%, ₹1.5 lakh a year before 5 April grows to about ₹71.82 lakh, and ₹12,000 a year grows to about ₹5.75 lakh.

Frequently asked questions
What is the SSY interest rate now?
8.2% a year for October to December 2026, the third quarter of FY 2026-27. The government resets small-savings rates every quarter, around 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. This projection uses the rate you leave in the box for all 21 years. Check the latest quarter with the National Savings Institute or India Post.
How much will I get if I invest ₹1.5 lakh a year?
At a constant 8.2%, with each year's deposit in before 5 April, 15 deposits of ₹1.5 lakh (₹22.5 lakh in all) grow to about ₹71.82 lakh at the end of year 21. ₹12,000 a year the same way grows to about ₹5.75 lakh. Paying ₹1,000 a month before the 5th earns a little less, because the later months have less time in that year's interest.
Can I withdraw before 21 years?
The account matures 21 years from opening. After the girl turns 18, or passes Class 10, up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year can be withdrawn for education or marriage. Deposits stop after 15 years. The account keeps earning interest until maturity. The slider shows what that withdrawal does to the final amount.
What is the minimum deposit, and what if I miss a year?
The minimum is ₹250 a year and the maximum is ₹1.5 lakh, in multiples of ₹50. Under the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme Rules, 2019, a year of default attracts a ₹50 penalty. Confirm the penalty still printed on the India Post or NSI form before you pay it.
Is SSY tax-free in the new regime?
Interest and maturity are tax-free in both regimes. The deposit is deductible only in the old regime, inside the ₹1.5 lakh 80C-type limit. The new regime does not allow that deduction.
Who can open an SSY account?
A guardian opens it for a girl who is still under 10. One account per girl. A family can open two accounts, or three when the children are twins or triplets. The girl and the guardian should be resident Indians when the account is opened.
SSY, PPF or a mutual fund for a daughter's education?
SSY is only for a girl, pays a government-set rate and locks the money until maturity, with a limited withdrawal from age 18. PPF is open to anyone, also government-set, with a 15-year term. A mutual-fund SIP can be aimed at any goal and can fall in value. Compare a rupee amount in the PPF and SIP calculators. This is not a recommendation.
